Food Bank Challenge - brief update

Clause 10 - Plan three meals which all cross over ingredients to avoid food wastage.

Clause 11 - Make a meal with leftovers, or parts of food which you would normally throw away.

I've been considering these two Clauses and I realise that I've been doing it anyway.  Recently I have been making more of an effort to only buy the ingredients we need, making sure leftovers are eaten* and creating meals from what we have in the fridge / freezer rather than going out and buying something else.  In turn this leads to...

Clause 14 - Research ways that you can preserve food for longer in your kitchen.  Try one!

Since subscribing to Oddbox I've been using some of their food preserving tips.  The more obvious one being to prep veg and freeze it, which I do if they include a lot of onions because you can cook them direct from frozen.  My favourite is putting veg into fridge in water. This can liven up slightly soft carrots and pepper, it keeps brocolli florets alive for longer.  My current brocolli is regrowing its leaves!

Pesto can keep for longer once opened if you add some oil on top.

Clause 15 - Find your nearest Community Fridge and work out how you can help.  I searched Hubbub which has a page about Community Fridges and allows you to search for your nearest Fridge.  I live between two Community Fridges, apparently.  One is run by a church, the other part of a Community Cafe. There are potential volunteering options at the cafe if that was something you wanted to do.

I'm calling this Challenge DONE.

*The chickens are also rather good at hoovering up leftover greenery!
